So let’s get down to the nitty-gritty of this lip care staple.
What is Aquaphor
Aquaphor creates lip products that are petrolatum-based with other nourishing ingredients.
They hydrate your lips to promote healing and prevent further cracking. It comes in a tube as an ointment or lip balm stick.
Some of the ingredients include:
- Castor Seed Oil,
- Beeswax
- Shea Butter,
- Sunflower Seed Wax,
- Hydrogenated Castor Oil,
- Panthenol (Vitamin B5)
- Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E),
- Jojoba Seed Oil,
- Tocopherol (Vitamin E),
- Vitamin C
I personally love that it contains so many oils and vitamins which makes it much more naturally hydrating.

How To Use Aquaphor To Heal Lips
Aquaphor can be put on your lips every day, every night, as often as you need it.
It is safe, non-toxic and very moisturizing. You may need to reapply it multiple times a day depending on your daily activities and/or the condition of your lips. You can also leave it on overnight (recommended). I apply it religiously when I’m going out and before bed.
It is best to apply it to clean lips. However, it can also be used under lipstick, depending on the type and the look you’re going for (although, if you have very chapped, cracked and/or sore lips, you should avoid cosmetic lips products until they are healed).
It is a great idea to apply Aquaphor to your lips every time you need to leave the house and walk with it when you are going out.
The SPF content is very good for your lips and will help to protect your sensitive lip skin from sun damage, which can slow down healing and increase signs of aging.

Side Effects Of Using Aquaphor To Heal Lips
Aquaphor is generally well-tolerated and there aren’t many (if any) reported side effects when using this product. However, as with ALL products, irritation and allergic reactions are always a possibility.
If you are allergic to petrolatum or petroleum derivatives and products (especially lanolin) then you should not use Aquaphor.
It is fragrance-free and preservative-free so it’s great for people with extra-senstive skin. However, I still recommend doing a patch test before using the product on your whole lip, especially if they are severely cracked, chapped or peeling.
Also always check your product dates to ensure that you’re using a product that has not expired.
If you notice any tingling, burning, swelling, itching, or discomfort when using Aquaphor, stop immediately, and wash it off of your lips. If the symptoms do not get better, seek medical help as soon as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Will aquaphor lighten dark lips?
Aquaphor does not have bleaching ingredients. However, its moisturizing and healing properties can help the lips to look healthier and pinker over time.
Many times, dark lips are caused by trauma (dryness, irritation, cracking, chapping, peeling, smoking, bad products, etc.) which can cause injury and scarring to the lips. This results in the skin becoming darker.
Aquaphor heals the lips and protects them, so they regenerate healthier, less pigmented cells over time.

Does Aquaphor actually heal lips?
Aquaphor really does help your lips to heal by providing moisture, nourishment, and protection.
The skin of your lips is very thin and very sensitive. For it to heal, it only needs small concentrations of healing ingredients (vitamins and antioxidants) and LOTS of moisture and hydration. It also needs to be protected from further irritation, sun damage, and other environmental stressors.
Aquaphor does all of these things.

How long does Aquaphor take to heal your lips?
If Aquaphor is used consistently, you will start to see a difference in the condition of your lips in a matter of days.
Of course, this will vary depending on how badly your lips are injured, the cause of your dry and cracked lips (and whether you can prevent or control the cause), and how consistently you use the product.

Is Aquaphor or Vaseline better for lips?
In my opinion, Aquaphor is a better choice for your lips. But this can also depend on personal experience and preference.
Both Aquaphor and Vaseline have lip products that are petroleum-based and contain additional ingredients to nourish and heal the lips.
However, Aquaphor, to me, is better at providing more moisture and hydration to already dry lips. It also contains more conditioning ingredients.
On the other hand, vaseline is more of a preventative option. It prevents your lips from becoming too chapped or dry as it locks in moisture that is already there. But, some of their lip products do have additional ingredients to help add extra moisture. Just not as intensely as Aquaphor.

Is Aquaphor better than chapstick?
Aquaphor is better to be used in cold weather while thinner formulations like chapstick are better for the hot, humid weather.
Aquaphor is thicker and provides more moisture than chapstick. So it is great for those months or environments where your lips are more prone to dryness.
Is Aquaphor lip treatment good for psoriasis and eczema?
If you suffer from psoriasis and/or eczema and they also affect your lips, then Aquaphor is a great treatment for them.
Aquaphor is extremely moisturizing and non-irritating. It will definitely help with dryness, irritation, and peeling.
