Argan Oil for Lips- Benefits & Will it Lighten Dark Lips

Can you use Argan Oil For Lips? Argan oil is known for its hydrating and nourishing qualities so it’s logical to assume that it will also be great for our pouts.
So, in this article, we will discuss what Argan oil does for the skin in general and how it can be used to make our lips the best they can be!
What Is Argan Oil
Argan Oil (the kind that is used cosmetically) is a non-refined, vegetable oil that is cold-pressed and extracted from unroasted Argan kernels, native to Morrocco.
Many people also use food-grade argan oil which is extracted from roasted argan kernels and is safe to be consumed.
Nutritionally, Argan oil contains:
- Tocopherols (vitamin E),
- Phytosterols, Polyphenols,
- Squalene,
- Saturated and unsaturated fatty acids (including oleic and linoleic acid),
- Melatonin, and coenzyme Q10.
All of these can have great benefits for the hair and skin.
Benefits Of Argan Oil For Lips & Skin
Argan oil is:
- Hydrating and moisturizing – it is very rich in Vitamin E which conditions the lips and helps the skin retain more water and moisture. It makes a great treatment for dry lips.
- Antioxidant-rich – argan oil contains loads of antioxidants like Vitamin E, melatonin, plant sterols, and coenzyme Q10 which all have powerful free-radical fighting abilities. This protects the skin from environmental and sun damage, and prevents premature wrinkles and aging!
- Anti-inflammatory – this oil is also great for soothing irritated skin and even chapped lips. It can be applied to acne-affected areas of skin or cold sores on your lips to help them heal. If you react to a product or your lips are just cracked and irritated from dryness or the weather, it can help soothe them and promote healing.
- Fast-absorbing – unlike other conditioning lip oils, argan oil will absorb into your skin and lips super fast. It does not leave an oily, greasy residue behind. It is comfortable to keep on your skin and lips all day or all night without being messy.
- Easily added to your routine – argan oil can be mixed in with your daily moisturizer for your skin or even applied with your everyday chapstick or lip treatment. It can be mixed with most ingredients safely and is usually well tolerated.

Will Argan Oil Lighten Dark Lips
Argan oil itself does not have bleaching properties, but it will improve the appearance of dark lips.
Dark lips are most often caused by trauma to the thin skin of the lips that causes scarring. If you heal your lips and consistently treat and nourish them, they will eventually become lighter, pinker, plumper, and healthier!
Argan oil can be used in this treatment as a lip conditioner and healing solution.
I tried Argan oil out in peppermint lip balm on my lips for a few weeks and I saw they visibly got lighter and pinker. Keep reading for the recipe.

Does Argan Oil Make Your Lips Bigger
Argan oil is not a lip plumper, but it can increase collagen and elastin production in the skin which can make your lips more supple.
You will not look like you have had fillers or anything, but with consistent application, argan oil can help your lips to eventually look softer and slightly plumper than before.

Side Effect Of Using Argan Oil For Lips
Argan oil is generally well tolerated and considered universally safe to use on the skin and the lips. However, there is always the possibility of irritation and allergic reactions.
I always recommend that you do a patch test before applying any ingredient (no matter how safe they seem) to your skin, especially your lips.
Remember that the skin of your lips is thinner and much more sensitive than other parts of your skin and may be more easily irritated.
Additionally, if you have never used argan oil before, you will not know whether you could be allergic to it or not, so again, I recommend doing a patch test for a few days, first.
If you develop symptoms like redness, swelling, rashes, blisters, pain, or burning, wash the oil off and do not use it again. If the symptoms worsen, seek medical attention immediately.

DIY Argan Oil Lip Balm Recipes
Here are some great DIY argan oil recipes I love for the lips. I recommend using food-grade argan oil so that if you lick it off, you have nothing to worry about!
However, cosmetic argan oil is just fine, too. You will only need a small amount and it will be entirely safe if you lick that off as well.
1- Shea Butter + Argan Oil Lip Balm
Ingredients/materials:
- 2 tbsps Shea butter
- 2 tbsps Argan oil
- 1 tbsp beeswax
- 8 drops of Roman Chamomile essential oil
- 1 drop of Vitamine E oil (more if you prefer)
- Lip balm tubes
- Heat-resistant bowl
- Pot
- Stirring spoons
Method:
- Make a hot water bath by boiling some water in your pot.
- Place the Shea butter, argan oil, beeswax, and vitamin E oil in your heat-resistant bowl.
- When the water in the pot is simmering, place the bowl with the added ingredients in the hot water.
- Let all the ingredients slowly melt and stir to combine.
- You can test the consistency by dipping a clean spoon into the melted mixture and leaving it to cool. If you are satisfied with how it feels when it cools down and solidifies, you can remove the mixture from the hot water.
- Add in your essential oil and mix well.
- Pour the mixture into your lip balm tubes and let them cool down.
- Store and use as needed.
This recipe will give you about 8 lip balms. The measurements can be adjusted to make more or less.
