Lip Blushing What to Expect & Aftercare Tips to Heal Fast
Lip blushing uses a technique similar to the whip-shading or pepper-shading techniques seen in traditional tattooing.
Now after the blushing procedure your lips will take about 4 weeks to completely heal. But as with any kind of tattooing procedure, how you take care of your lips afterward will largely affect how your lips look in the long term.
So to maximize the benefits of lip blushing and to get the best results, it is important that you learn about and follow proper aftercare dos and don’ts.
What to Expect after Lip Blushing – Healing Stages
Day | Expectations |
1 | Swelling, sensitivity, and a heavy, thick lipstick appearance will be present on your lips. The color is deeper for the first several days than it will be completely healed. |
2 | Your lips will be somewhat swollen, with some redness peeking through depending on the blush color, soreness, and a tiny metallic taste. |
3 | Your lips will have less swelling, a thicker texture, a minor change in color, soreness, and a heated sensation will be. They aren’t exfoliated yet. |
4 | Lip exfoliation starts with very chapped lips. As the epidermis (top layer) peels away, the hue will lighten. During this stage of recovery, lips will appear to be entirely colorless. Nevertheless, the dermal layer (second layer) will progressively darken to the right color as the lips heal fully. |
5 | Your lips will be quite chapped, but the chapping phase of healing will be almost over. |
6 | By this time, the lips will start to develop a lovely, rich tint. |
7-13 | During this time, lip color fades, and a white-grey haze forms on the lips, signaling the start of the frosty second chapping phase. |
14 | Each day, until day 21, more color becomes visible (which is 3 weeks post-procedure). |
21 | By this time, healing is usually complete. The color that is now visible will be your semi-permanent color. Your lips might remain dry for a few weeks afterward but that is easily managed with lip balms. |

Aftercare Tips to make your lips Heal Faster & Better After Lip Blushing
What you can do to speed up recovery after lip blushing will vary depending on the stage of healing your lips are going through.
So we made a table with aftercare tips for each healing stage
Healing Stage Period | Things you can do to help lips heal faster |
First 24 hours | Around 4-6 hours after the operation, wipe the fluid from your lips with a clean water wipe. Follow this step with a moisturizing lip balm and keep your lips hydrated. |
After the first 24 hours | It’s critical to keep washing and hydrating the lips twice daily. You should use an occlusive balm or light moisturizer after washing your lips with water or a fragrance-free cleanser on a cotton pad. Hydrate your lips enough to keep the dryness at bay for the first few days without overdoing it. |
The flaky phase | Peeling off the scabs is never a good idea, no matter how tempting it seems. Picking at the skin might cause the color in the lip blush to fade or cause patchiness over the region. This action, like other scabs, can reopen the incision, making you more prone to infection. Allow the dried flakes to fall off while a new layer of healing skin emerges below. Make a habit of washing your hands and keeping your lips clean. It’s also super important to keep your lips moist at this point. Use a hydrating lip balm or petroleum jelly. |
End of the healing process | Keep your lips moisturized and follow up with your technician for a check-up. They will assess the healing and determine if you need any touch-ups or evening out and will further advise you on long-term care for your lips to maximize the results. |

Always keep your lips clean and as oil-free as possible. Avoid over-exfoliating, smoking, and other things that would cause your lip color to fade faster.
NOTE:
Depending on who does your lip blushing, and their collection of pigments and products. They will recommend specific lip ointments or other treatments that will best work with their process to maximize your results.
However, when it comes to lip balms for long-term use with SPF, that is generally up to you as long as it has an SPF of 30 or more, and as long as it is hydrating.
Things to Avoid After Lip Blushing
Also, when your lips are recovering, don’t overstretch them with huge smiles or pucker them.
Those actions produce strain and friction between the robust normal skin encircling the mouth and the damaged inflamed lip margins by pushing and pulling against them. The thin mucous membrane of the mouth continues on the lip skin and it isn’t as tough as regular skin.
