As more and more people in the cosmetics and skincare industries are exploring natural remedies, many have begun looking at natural ways to tint their lips.

An easy, yet unsurprising lip tint DIY is to use Beetroot! Yep. The vegetable. Let’s see how!

Can You Use Beetroot to Stain Or Color Lips

Yes, you can use beetroot as a lip stain or tint. This is because Beetroot produces natural juices that are red in color and that also stain.

I have been using beetroot juice to naturally color my lips for years now. For me, the tint feels light, looks natural, and lasts almost all day.

Many natural chemists and color makers use it to create shades of purple and red. Its deep coloring and ability to stain make it great for DIY natural lip tints and lip products.

Beetroot juice can be applied directly on the lips which is what I usually do or it can be mixed into recipes to make lip products.

DIY Beetroot Lip Recipes

1- Beetroot Lip Stain

Ingredients/Materials:

  • 1 small beetroot
  • Sweet almond oil
  • Fresh Lemon Juice
  • Blender/juicer
  • Cup
  • Glass tube or transparent lip gloss tube

Directions:

  1. Wash and peel your beetroot and then place it in the juicer. If you are using a blender instead, cut the beetroot into smaller pieces and add some water to it in the blender.
  2. Blend your beetroot or pass it through the juicer. Strain the mixture through a mesh cloth or a muslin cloth and squeeze as much of the juice out as you can into a cup.
  3. You can also boil your beetroot juice to thicken it and intensify the color (this is optional).
  4. Add 2 drops of lemon juice to the mixture.
  5. Add the sweet almond oil in a 1:1 ratio. This means you’re adding the same amount of almond oil as the beet juice. So, your mixture should now be double the initial amount.
  6. Stir until well mixed and transfer to your storage containers.
  7. Apply as you would any other lip stain.

  2. You can also boil your beetroot juice to thicken it and intensify the color (this is optional).
  3. Add your beet juice and all the other ingredients to your bowl and microwave for a few seconds until everything is melted.
  4. Remove from the microwave and stir the mixture until well combined.
  5. Transfer to your clean storage jar and let the mixture cool down to room temperature. It should solidify a bit.
  6. Use this as you would a regular lip balm.
  7. Store in room temperature settings for up to 3 months and the refrigerator for up to 6 months.
  8. However, if the smell of color changes, dispose of this one and make a fresh batch.

How Long Will Beetroot Color Last On Lips

Unless you’re wiping your lips every 10 minutes, the red tint will most likely last you all day. Especially if you are using it in a lip balm and reapply it like you usually would.

Now how long beetroot lip color or stain will last will depend on what your lips go through from the time you put it on.

For me when I apply the beetroot juice directly it lasts a whole day once I am careful not to wash or wipe my lips.

Beetroot juice will immediately change the color of your lips and will gradually lighten your lips over time.

Beetroot has Vitamin C which reduces melanin production in the skin. When applied long term, it will eventually lighten dark lips. The red color of the juice will also keep your lips looking naturally pinker.
