Skincare professionals have found an easy way to provide lip care treatments to dark lips without too much work!

That’s right, we’re going to be talking about lip balms that help to lighten dark lips.

Reminder: What Causes Dark Lips

Dark lips (also called lip hyperpigmentation) occur when excess melanin is produced in the skin of the lips, which makes the skin cells darker. Melanin can be overproduced in response to:

  • Dehydration
  • Excess exposure to the sun
  • Irritation or allergic reaction to lip products, toothpaste, or even food/drinks
  • Too much caffeine
  • Lip sucking
  • Smoking
  • Vitamin Deficiencies
  • Long-term Medications/Treatments (chemotherapy, etc)
  • Other medical conditions (anemia, cancer, etc)
  • Pregnancy and hormone changes

Treating Dark Lips

The easiest way to treat dark lips is by using topical treatments, preferably easy ones you can wear all day.

This is where lip balms come in. When using lip balms to treat dark lips, you have the chance to combine a lip-lightening treatment with hydration treatment AND SPF, all while looking good.

When choosing a lip-lightening treatment you will most likely see ingredients like kojic acid, niacinamide, turmeric, vitamin C, lemon extract, etc.

You will also see hydrating ingredients like shea butter, plant oils, glycerin, and petroleum jelly. Finally, I recommend that you choose lip balms that have SPF so that you can protect your lips from the sun.

Bonus Tips On How To Prevent Lip Darkening

Remember that lip care is just as important as skin care everywhere else on your body.

  • Develop a simple lip care routine that will be easy to maintain and that will keep your lips healthy. This includes exfoliation, hydration, moisturization and sun protection.
  • Drink enough water! Your lips are one of the first places that show physical signs when you are dehydrated. They become dry and start to peel. Stay hydrated so your lips do not have to go through that.
  • Avoid daily activities and habits that will damage or darken your lips. This includes smoking, using lip products that you know are not healthy or good for you, eating foods that will stain your lips, etc.
  • Check with your doctors if you have medical conditions or are on treatments that darken your lips.
