Tea Tree Oil on Lips: Benefits & How to Safely Use

Tea Tree Oil is one of the essential oils traditionally used for decades in skin care and herbal medicine.

It can be used for a variety of conditions on different parts of the skin. But can you also use tea tree oil on your lips?

Can You Safely Use Tea Tree Oil On Lips

Yes, you can safely use tea tree oil on your lips if it is mixed with other ingredients or carrier oils.

Tea tree oil is a very concentrated essential oil. It cannot be applied to the skin by itself. Doing this may cause chemical burns.

However, it is usually diluted with carrier oils and mixed with other preparations to make it safe and tolerable for your skin.

Since your lips are much thinner than anywhere else and very sensitive, you should take extra care to dilute your tea tree oil adequately.

Benefits Of Using Tea Tree Oil On Lips

When used properly, tea tree oil has a host of benefits for the lips. It will:

  • Moisturize the lips which can help with dryness, peeling, and chapping
  • Prevent infections (especially on chapped and
  • peeling lips)
  • Boost circulation to the skin of the lips making them healthier
  • Help to heal and lighten dark and damaged lips over time – due to its healing and exfoliating properties.
  • Reduce inflammation preventing further damage to the lips
  • Provides some UV protection
  • Keep the lips clean with its astringent properties

How Often Can You Use Tea Tree Oil On Lips

Tea tree oil, once diluted properly, can be used as often as you like on your lips.

Some people use it in lip balms multiple times a day while others use it at least once daily as a specific treatment.

Unless you have an allergic or a sensitivity reaction to tea tree oil ( which is rare), you can use it as often as necessary. This will vary for different people based on why they are using it and the sensitivity and condition of their lips.

How Long Can You Leave Tea Tree Oil On Lips

You can leave tea tree oil on your lips for as long as 12-24 hours if it is diluted well and your skin can tolerate it.

This will vary for each person. However, tea tree oil, once it is diluted enough to not be too harsh on your skin, can be left on for as long as you wish. Its antiseptic properties prevent bacteria and other microorganisms from building up. It also conditions the skin.

It is not recommended that you leave one application of tea tree oil longer than 24 hours as you should generally be cleaning or washing your lips at least once time per day. Note that I said cleaning or washing, NOT exfoliating.

How Do You Mix & Apply Tea Tree Oil On Lips

For every 1 or 2 drops of tea tree oil, you should add about 12 drops of the carrier oil that you choose to use.

Because of how strong tea tree oil is, it can burn your skin if applied directly.

If you are using it in a lip balm, you can add your diluted mixture to the lip balm based on the recipe, or you can use less tea tree oil.

If you are using more than one ingredient along with your carrier oil, you may not need to use less tea tree oil as the other ingredients will also help to dilute it.

It all depends on your skin and the recipe you are using.

Some great carrier oils that you can use with tea tree oil for lips are:

  • Coconut Oil
  • Olive Oil
  • Almond Oil
  • Jojoba Oil
  • Shea Butter

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)

Are there side effects when using tea tree oil on lips?

There are a few side effects to consider when using tea tree oil on your lips:

  • It can make the lips too dry. Even though it is said to be moisturizing, because of its astringent properties, it can dry out the lips. This is why it is important to dilute it enough and to use moisturizing ingredients and carrier oils with it.
  • If not diluted well, it can cause burns. Tea tree oil is very concentrated. If it is used alone on the skin, or if it is not diluted enough for your skin, it can burn your skin. If you notice your skin is irritated for a prolonged time after applying your lip treatment, wash it off and seek medical attention.
